Sonic Dunks on AAA Games with a new Trailer

Sonic Mania was a rip-roaring success. Everybody seemed to love the return to the 90’s with games made by people who really put love into it. It seemed like Sonic Mania had more enjoyment packed into it than most AAA games… and Sega realized this. Sega is releasing a new version of the game called Sonic Mania Plus, and along with that is a brand new trailer. This trailer might be the best thing to come out of Sega’s PR in a long time, and shows a lot of industry awareness.

This trailer mimics the style of 90’s game commercials when developers would literally compare their game to their main competitor. They compare the game to a fake AAA game called “finger guns” and use it to mock AAA tendencies. Characteristics that are put on blast include faceless protagonists with no personality, Bland shooter gameplay, Gritty realistic graphics, loot boxes, and so much more. I especially liked when the salesman referenced players developing minor (or major) addictions through microtransactions and loot boxes. The quote “The more you spend, the better the game”, does a great job of illustrating beliefs a lot of AAA publishers genuinely hold.

It is awesome to see a publisher recognize the market’s disdain for the same thing over and over again. We know that publishers know we hate loot boxes, but major publishers have never referenced things like faceless protagonists. This shows that some publishers are starting to realize that players are getting bored. Hopefully, Sega will use these newfound realizations in their new games, but Sonic mania is a good start. Now if only we can get a good 3D sonic game…
